What is an SLA and why does it matter for your IT?
An SLA (Service Level Agreement) sets out what you can expect from your IT partner. Read what it contains, why it matters and what it saves you.
By Max HoltropSLA stands for Service Level Agreement. It is an agreement between you and your IT partner about what you can expect: how quickly issues are handled, what is arranged and what it costs. It sounds formal, but in practice an SLA is mostly peace of mind. In this article you read what an SLA involves and why it makes the difference.
What an SLA contains
An SLA records the agreements, such as:
- Response times. How quickly do we handle a report or outage?
- What is covered. Which support, management and security are included?
- Availability. What can you expect from your systems?
- Who does what. No discussion afterwards about responsibilities.
Why an SLA matters
Without agreements it is unclear what you can expect when something goes wrong. With an SLA you know exactly where you stand, and your IT partner has an interest in keeping those agreements. That prevents surprises, both in service and in cost.
